Beyond Textbooks (BT)
Beyond Textbooks (BT) is an online educational resource created by Vail Unified School District in Arizona. It is now used nationwide, supporting over 8,000 teachers and more than 140,000 students. The goal of Beyond Textbooks is to improve student achievement by working closely with schools to implement the district’s teaching and learning frameworks.
The program’s philosophy goes beyond traditional textbooks and state standards. It focuses on a supportive, teacher-centered approach that promotes student growth and success. Instead of a top-down curriculum, Beyond Textbooks encourages a “shoulder to shoulder” partnership where educators collaborate to develop and tailor lessons to meet their students’ needs.
Fountain Hills Unified School District adopted Beyond Textbooks at Fountain Hills High School in 2017. Since then, the school improved its academic grade from a "C" to an "A" within two years and has earned an "A" letter grade six times. Building on this success, the program was introduced at Fountain Hills Middle School and McDowell Mountain Elementary School. Since implementation, FHMS has achieved two consecutive "A" grades and increased its overall score by 20 points. Both Fountain Hills Middle and High School are recognized as 2025 National Model Schools. McDowell Mountain Elementary has also shown significant academic growth in its first two years using Beyond Textbooks, with the school being recognized by US News & World Report as a "Best" & "National" ranked elementary school.
