Special Education

Special Education provides specially designed instruction tailored to meet the unique needs of students with disabilities. These services ensure that every eligible student has access to a Free and Appropriate Public Education (FAPE), as mandated by the federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

Students who qualify for Special Education are supported through an Individualized Education Plan (IEP), which outlines specific goals, accommodations, and services based on their individual needs. All students with an IEP are given equal opportunities to participate in academic, non-academic, extracurricular, and ancillary programs alongside their peers in general education settings.

To qualify for Special Education services:

  • A student must be evaluated and identified by a multidisciplinary team as having a disability under IDEA.

  • The team must also determine that the student requires specially designed instruction to benefit from their education.

IDEA recognizes several disability categories, including but not limited to:

  • Autism

  • Developmental Delay

  • Emotional Disability

  • Hearing impairment

  • Intellectual disability

  • Multiple Disabilities

  • Orthopedic impairment

  • Other Health Impairment

  • Preschool Severe Delay

  • Specific Learning Disability

  • Speech or Language Impairment

  • Traumatic Brain Injury

  • Visual impairment
